Scholarships & Awards

JFR supports the work of those working on issues affecting elders as well as those working directly with elders. It has given the Richard Ladd Award since 2003 for those working to improve community based care for elders. Scholarship support has been given to service learning students working in Nicaragua since 2004. The Donna Sanders Award has been given to a direct care worker for promoting well-being and the Life Enrichment Activities Program since 2009. JFR has also provided support to other organizations supporting elders such as the Oregon Gerontological Association and the Assisted Living Special Interest Group of the Gerontological Association of America.

If you would like to make nominations for the Richard Ladd Award, Donna Sanders LEAP Award, or talk about an exceptional volunteer working with elders, please contact us at bmitchell@jfrfoundation.org.

JFR proudly announces its 2011 award winners!

Award recipients are recognized for helping JFR achieve its mission to create and disseminate proven, sustainable, and replicable models which improve the lives of vulnerable older adults, particularly developing areas.

2011 Volunteer of the Year: Laura Boone

This year the award for Volunteer of the Year for the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation (JFR) goes to Laura Boone of Charleston, West Virginia. In 2010, JFR launched a new initiative in the Appalachia region of the United States. The first area of focus for the Appalachian Initiative is southern West Virginia. Laura has been a very strong connector for the Foundation. Her knowledge of issues, organizations, and people in WV has been invaluable in helping JFR become more knowledgeable WV. She is now also a member of our newly formed Appalachia Technical Panel that will assist the JFR Foundation in further expanding its programs and creating new ideas of how best to serve the older adult population of Appalachia.

Laura Boone is currently the Director of the Health Sciences Program at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. She holds a Law Degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore. She has also served with the Alzheimer’s Association in Washington, D.C., Director of the West Virginia Long Term Care Partnership, and is the author of the article “Training a Workforce to Care for People in West Virginia With Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias”, published in the West Virginia State Medical Journal.

The JFR Volunteer Award is given annually to an individual who helps the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation achieve it mission to “create and disseminate proven, sustainable, and replicable models which improve the lives of vulnerable older adults, particularly developing areas.”

2011 Richard Ladd Award: Dr. Benneth Husted

The Jessie F. Richardson Foundation (JFR) would like to congratulate Dr. Benneth Husted of Portland, OR for being named this year’s recipient of the Ladd Award for Home and Community Based Care. As a physician, Dr. Husted founded and until recently served as the Executive Medical Director of the non-profit Housecall Providers, Inc. Since 1995, Dr. Husted has worked tirelessly to help older adults, particularly those difficult to serve in traditional medical networks. Housecall Providers has helped countless older adults to remain in less restrictive environments and receive the medical care they need. Housecall Providers is unique among health care providers, known for sending physicians to the settings where their patients live. For many, particularly those with chronic physical and mental conditions, this makes the difference in their ability to remain in more independent settings. Dr. Husted’s vision and commitment to increase access to medical care for this type of patient has resulted in wide recognition and admiration of Housecall Providers.

Dr. Husted holds a D.O. from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Certified in Family Practice by American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

In addition, Josephine has helped to organize donations, storage space and shipping logistics for medical equipment that JFR sent to Nicaragua in January of this year.
