Rise Above Poverty (RAP) | Big Red | Adopt-a-Granny Wheels to Nicaragua
JFR set out years ago to help elders by building capacity and creating sustainable strategies for the future. However, one cannot help but be moved by the drastic need of immediate care for elders in Nicaragua; ailing elders seeking medicine, beds with thin and stained mattresses missing sheets, and wheelchairs made of bicycle tires and plastic lawn chairs. Medicine is in incredibly short supply, so when JFR brings in donations like, ointments, creams, or bottles of medication, they are repackaged into smaller quantities so that they can be utilized by many more people. Throughout the year, JFR brings down medical supplies and equipment by way of our collegiate service learning programs, but once a year we try to augment this by sending a shipping container of supplies to the needy groups.
We are asking for your help in meeting immediate needs for Nicaragua’s elders in one, or both, of two ways. Firstly, sending a container is a complex endeavor, so we want to fill it with vital supplies. Many of the supplies we are asking for are items that are no longer of use in the United States and we would like to give them a new lease on life. Secondly, cash donations to help defray the cost of shipping and distribution of goods in-country are needed.
